Who is John Thomson?
I am the FA Charter Standard Coordinator of Hindsford Junior FC. It is my responsibility to make sure all coaches are up to date with their training and CRC status.

I currently manage U9 Diamonds, help train U9 Aces, U12 Hawks and our new U12 girls team Hurricanes. I also help with setting up the new U7 teams each year, most of whom come through Elite Coaching Academy.

To date, I have gained FA Level 1 qualifications in coaching both Football & Futsal, FA Youth Award 1 & 2. I have completed essential Safeguarding and First Aid training also. I am 2/3rds through my FA Level 2 qualification and I aim to complete this in 2017.

Away from Hindsford I am a Technical Training Specialist in the Water Industry, a career path I followed as a result of my coaching experience.

Where do you see Hindsford in five years’ time?
In the last three years Hindsford Junior FC has more than doubled in size, each year has seen another two teams coming through at U7 age. This season we have our first female team representing Hindsford, the U12 Hurricanes. I hope we get enough interest over the next year to set up another.

One issue with the growth of the club is the availability of suitable facilities and pitches. We have the use of Lodge Lane playing fields, Fred Longworth playing fields and even St Georges Park but we would like to improve the Lodge Lane playing fields and surrounding area, to provide a safer learning environment for the current and future Hindsford Junior FC players. We have already taken steps to do this but we are a non-profit, Community Amateur Sports Club, run by volunteers, there is only so much you can do without support and funding.

Apart of football what other sport do you like? Can you see this sport introduced to Hindsford?
My first experience at Hindsford Junior FC was when I joined the U10’s in 1990 as a goalkeeper, I played for two seasons before I took an interest in another sport at high school, basketball.

I excelled in basketball throughout my teens, reaching the NW College Finals with Wigan & Leigh College, representing Wigan in the Youth Games and playing for the Manchester Giants Youth Team.
With support and funding, anything is possible.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
My son: James. Anyone who has met him knows he is fearless and willing to take on any challenge.

My fiancé: Laura. Laura has the patience of a saint, putting up with all the hours I spend at the club and supporting me every day.

My family and friends who have to put up with the behind the scenes stress :)

Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I truly believe that coaching young children is the most rewarding thing you can do, to see someone improve and develop as a result of the coaching and mentoring you provide is amazing. Summer 2016, 4 of my U9 players have signed contracts with Pro Clubs. This is due to the hard work and effort of the individuals, but the warm feeling of pride that you have been involved in their development in one way or another sticks with you.
